DNA diet matches genetic profile to meal plan

No matter what or how much you eat, each person metabolizes fat and carbohydrates differently, so certain diets may work for others, but not for you. Enter the DNA diet; a diet plan said to be tailored to your genetic response to food and exercise.

San San Ng is a doctor in human genetics and chief scientific officer of Genovive, one of several firms selling this customized diet plan.

Ng says customers swab their cheeks, send back the samples, and certified lab technicians will determine which exercise and diet plan will work best: low fat, low carb, low glycemic, or a balanced diet.

"How people metabolize carbohydrates, how people absorb fat, and based on their unique profile and how they respond to exercise, we make an all-natural meal program and exercise program to help them better assist their weight loss," Ng explains.

Ng says customers who strictly followed the individualized program lost an average of three to five pounds a week.'

Massachusetts-based Interkleukin Genetics and Newtopia also offer similar personalized DNA diet plans, using the science behind nutrigenomics--the study of genes and their effect on nutrition.

University of Chicago Dietician Grete Hornstrom says there is no data that proves clinicians can effectively match a diet to an individual's genotype, which means weight management all comes down to how much you exercise and how much you eat.

Hornstrom says she'd advise her patients to simply make healthier choices before spending money on the DNA diet. Though, she does remain hopeful about the future of weight loss and nutrigenomics.
