NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -

FOX 5 has learned that two Newton County elementary school students were treated for injuries after they were bitten by a fox while they were playing on the playground.

Newton County Animal Control tells FOX 5 the attacks happened around lunchtime at Rocky Plains Elementary School in Covington. Both students are 6-year-old boys who are in kindergarten.

A school staffer got the children away from the animal after it attacked them.

"One of the [paraprofessionals] did kick the fox and get the fox off the two children.  The student that was more severely injured, another teacher picked him up and carried him inside," said Newton County Schools spokesperson Sherri Viniard.

When animal control arrived at the scene, the fox was already gone.

Animal control officials say the school principal described one of the victim's wounds as being more serious, and said the other child has slight puncture wounds and scrapes.  Both victims were taken to the hospital.

The mother of one of the victims, who asked not to be identified, said that doctors gave the boy a rabies shot and stitched him up.

Susan Wheeler said that her son, Scott, was the other boy bitten. She praised the paraprofessional who pulled the fox off of the first boy.

"Even picked the fox up and flung it is what we heard," Wheeler said. "The fox then attacked my son Scott and then Scott ran and the fox ran in the other direction."

Both mothers said that it wasn't the first time that a fox had been seen on the playground.

"The kids on the bus yesterday, that was the big talk of the bus, was the fox on the playground," Wheeler said.

"I just really don't understand how, why they let them go back outside after they saw the fox," the other mother said.

The mother said that the boys will need to endure weeks of painful rabies shots.

All of the schoolchildren were taken inside the building after the attack and all outdoor activities were canceled until the end of the school year, Viniard said.

Animal control officials set up traps in the area to try and catch it the fox.
