CPS Closings: Garvey, Manierre schools expected to be spared

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Members of the Board of Education will likely vote Wednesday to shut down dozens of schools, but sources tell FOX 32 News that at least a few on a list of 54 proposed closings will likely be spared.

Sources told FOX 32's Mike Flannery several board members feel very strongly that Marcus Garvey Elementary deserves to remain open. While it's likely there will be one vote by the board Wednesday to close dozens of schools, sources said they would push for separate, individual votes on five to ten other schools, including Garvey and Manierre Elementary.

As word spread that Manierre Elementary may be removed from the list of proposed school closings, little ones turned cartwheels while their elders hugged and wept tears of joy.

"I'm happy," says Shereena Allison, whose children attend Manierre. "As you seen, I was crying. Now, my son can go to Manierre and I don't have to fear anything."

Sources told FOX 32 News that at least four of the Board of Education's six current members were opposed Tuesday night to a staff recommendation to close Manierre and move its students to Jenner Academy. Their primary concern: three competing drug gangs whose turf the children would have to cross. Parents claimed gang-bangers have already posted blood-curdling threats on Facebook.

"One statement was saying that I'm killing everybody on Sed," Allison says. "Babykiller, something. Then they had a target, all my target killers on Savio, which is right across the street from Manierre."

While FOX 32 had the only broadcast news camera outside Tuesday night's meeting of Manierre Elementary parents, another crew was also on hand and doing interviews. They said they work for Hollywood superstar Robert Redford, who announced a few weeks ago that he will produce eight separate one-hour-long documentaries about Chicago and its challenges.

Wednesday's Board of Education meeting could be affected by the recent resignation of Penny Pritzker, nominated by President Obama to join his cabinet. There are six remaining members of the Board of Education, meaning there could be tie votes of 3-3.
