COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -

A text message that says "I'm about to leave" is the last time Janet Royer had contact with her son Thursday night.

"It's like a nightmare, it's the worst nightmare anyone can think of. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up. This is horrible," Royer said.

Her 21-year-old son, Matthew Royer, checked out of his Narragansett apartment at the University of Rhode Island and at around 6:30 p.m. started the seven-hour drive home to Collegeville to begin his summer vacation.

But Royer never made it home.

Pennsylvania State Police believe Royer did make it to Allentown, where his cell phone signal was picked up early Friday morning.

He was also seen on surveillance video at 2:07 a.m. getting gas just 35 miles from home, at Routes 78 and 100 in Breinigsville, Pa.

But that's the last anyone has seen or heard of him.

"He's so close to home. What happened to him between here and Route 100?" said Royer's mother.

Family and friends have been fanning out and driving the route Royer would have taken. They wonder if his car had driven off the road.

"It's a populated area. There's cameras everywhere. Somebody has to know something about him," said Royer.

Matthew is described as being 6 feet 1 inch tall, 160 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He was last seen driving his silver 2008 Chevy Cobalt with Pennsylvania license plate GZR-9059. Police released a photo of that make of car Monday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Skippack barracks of the Pennsylvania State Police at (610) 584-1250.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
