DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

Dozens of Detroiters exchanged guns for groceries Saturday. It's an effort meant to make neighborhoods safer and possibly save lives.

Members of the Wayne County sheriff's department tag and inspect all kinds of unloaded firearms - from long guns to handguns - which used to be in people's homes. The owners turned them in Saturday at New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God In Christ in Detroit, no questions asked, in exchange for $50 Meijer gift cards.

"It's a voluntary effort," explained Wayne County Executive Robert Fiacano. "For people who don't want a gun in their house."

The "Groceries for Guns" program is sponsored by Goodman Acker, a personal injury law firm in Southfield. The attorneys hope it will stop some of the violence plaguing Metro DEtroit or at least keep some of the guns out there from getting into the hands of children or criminals. Last week, 26 people were shot and 5 died in Detroit alone.

"This kind of violence, week in and week out, it's enough and it's time for an end to it," said attorney Jerry Acker.

Some protesters gathered outside the event but that didn't stop gun owners from turning in their weapons. Police record the serial numbers, then the guns are destroyed.

"I don't know why they're protesting because we're not forcing anyone to bring a gun here," said attorney Barry Goodman.

"These guns will never hurt anyone, we know that for sure," said Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon. "They're out of the stream of commerce and they're off the streets."
