Phoenix Zoo rounds up non-native turtles

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

The Phoenix Zoo is looking to help out Arizona's turtle population -- rounding up hundreds of unwanted reptiles.

As some turtle owners get tired of caring for their half-shelled friends, they decide to drop them off in the "moat" outside of Phoenix Zoo.

But those turtles have begun to pile up, and zoo officials are now live-trapping those unwanted turtles in efforts to control the population.

Many of the turtles released aren't native to the valley, and could potentially overcrowd ponds.

So far, 13 turtles have been collected.

Back in 2010, a 62-pound snapping turtle was found at Papago Park during one of these annual roundups. Zoo employees named him "Cracken."

Cracken was twice the size of the of the previous record holder, and was turned over to the Herpetological Society.
