Police: Woman made up story about being robbed on Mag Mile

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Chicago Police Department says a woman who claimed she was robbed of cash and jewelry worth hundreds of thousands on the Mag Mile earlier this week, made the whole thing up.

But this morning, she told FOX 32 News that she has an explanation.

Police questioned the 68-year-old Flossmoor woman. She said on Wednesday that a mob of men stole about $200,000 worth of jewelry and $6,000 in cash near the 700 block of North Michigan Avenue.

Detectives said after they reviewed the surveillance footage they found inconsistencies with her account and video that was recovered at the scene, near Saks Fifth Avenue.

The woman told FOX 32 on Thursday morning that she found the jewelry, called police and that it was a confusing situation.

So far, police have not indicated whether she will be charged for filing a fake police report.
