Batavia to restrict tattoo parlors from opening downtown

Posted: Updated:
BATAVIA, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The west suburban city of Batavia is looking to restrict tattoo parlors from opening in the downtown area, the Aurora-Beacon News reports.

City officials said tattoo parlors became a permitted use in the downtown when the zoning code was adopted in 2010. Previously, tattoo parlors were allowed only if a conditional use permit was approved.

Aldermen this week as a joint committee approved removing tattoo parlors and piercing studios from the list of uses allowed in the downtown mixed-use district. The city's plan commission made the recommendation in a 5 to 1 vote. The proposed change would not affect retailers and salons from offering ear piercing as a personal service.

The city has two tattoo parlors in the downtown. Fallen Star Tattoo is located on South Batavia Avenue and Twizted Images recently moved from South Washington Street to East Wilson Street.

The zoning code would continue to allow tattoo parlors within the community commercial and mixed use zoning districts, and the two existing tattoo parlors can remain in their locations as grandfathered nonconforming uses, city officials said.

The City Council will have the final vote on the issue.
