Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A man in his mid-20s who struck and killed a bicyclist while driving from the scene of a non injury shooting in South Los Angeles was in police custody this morning, authorities said.

The fatal crash at the intersection of 84th Street and Central Avenue happened moments after the shooting, which was reported around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on East 84th Street near Avalon Boulevard, said Lt. Julius Guay of the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Street Station.

The suspect was fleeing the shooting scene, driving erratically, when he struck and killed a 30- to 40-year-old man on a bicycle at the intersection of Central Avenue and 84th Street, Guay said.

The cyclist died at the scene and the driver was taken into custody shortly after the crash, he said. It was unclear what the suspect would be booked for as the investigation continued this morning into the shooting and crash, which took place about four blocks apart, Guay said.

A car at 84th and Avalon had a smashed windshield and bullet holes in its front and rear driver side windows, a news photographer reported from the scene.

The car driven by the suspect became airborne before it struck the bicyclist, hit a street sign and came to rest against another vehicle, witnesses told the photographer.
