Ariz. Senate debating Medicaid expansion

Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The Arizona Senate has begun debating a plan to expand Medicaid to 300,000 additional poor Arizonans that is championed by Gov. Jan Brewer.

Thursday afternoon's debate is the first by lawmakers on Brewer's proposal to embrace a signature part of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul law.

The Medicaid plan is being added onto a budget bill by Republican Majority Leader John McComish. It's strongly opposed by Senate President Andy Biggs and other conservative Republicans.

The Senate's 13 Democrats support the plan.

Senators turned away a Biggs amendment requiring a 2/3 vote for passage but adopted one forcing the plan to expire in 2017.

Brewer shocked many when she announced in January she wanted to expand Medicaid after opposing Obama's health care overhaul for years.
