PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) -

Makayla Lance is only 17 years old and facing death. Tuesday she was shot in the face allegedly by her 18-year-old boyfriend. When police responded to the scene, he was trying to save her life.

"Our deputies entered the house and found the 18-year-old boyfriend rendering aid on the 17-year-old victim," said Captain Atkins with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department. "They were located in the bedroom of the house."

The suspect, who is in custody awaiting formal charges, told police the shooting was accidental, that he was wrestling with his girlfriend when he jokingly pulled a gun on her as he has done before. But this time the gun went off shooting Lance in the head. She was transported to the hospital and placed on life support. Doctors don't expect her to survive.

The gun was recovered in the trash can behind the house, an act that could make it difficult for the shooting to be ruled accidental.

"We're checking to see if there has been any problems throughout the day, throughout the week with their relationship," Atkins said. "Anytime somebody takes another person's life, there's probably going to be some type of consequences."

The family could take the 17-year-old girl off of life support as early as Wednesday night. Once that happens, the sheriff's department will hand their case over to the prosecutor's office, which will then determine charges.
