D.A. Seth Williams: Gosnell Is 'A Murderer And A Monster'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

"Kermit Gosnell, at some point, became a monster," said District Attorney Seth Williams, who shot straight from the hip Wednesday as he spoke for the first time about the abortion doctor's conviction.

Gosnell was found guilty this week in the deaths of three babies and one patient.

"Any doctor who cuts into the necks, severing the spinal cords of living, breathing babies who would otherwise survive with proper medical attention, is a murderer and a monster," Williams told reporters at a noon press conference.

The entire prosecution team gathered after Gosnell was sentenced to his third life term Wednesday. He cut a deal Tuesday to avoid the death penalty and serve consecutive life sentences in a case that shocked the city and the nation.

"Kermit Gosnell will never kill another baby," Williams declared.

The D.A. praised former city narcotics Officer James Woods who helped crack the case, the crime scene investigators who gathered the evidence, and the prosecutors who tried the case.

Williams says Gosnell's conviction should send a message: "I don't think there's a doctor in the world who would think that receiving three consecutive life sentences is not a deterrent."

Prosecutors also took a swipe at two state agencies that failed to detect what went on at Gosnell's clinic for over 17 years.

"These (state) workers were just doing what they were told, which was basically, we're not going to do any inspections at these locations," said Assistant D.A. Joanne Pescatore.

Williams said Gosnell took in close to $2 million a year for performing abortions, some of them on Sundays with his wife present. He says his office cannot prosecute state regulators who failed to uncover Gosnell's actions.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
