BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A pair of osprey that made a nest on a power pole in Berlin Township, near the Rockwood Landfill will be getting a new home thanks to crews from DTE Energy.

On Wednesday workers began working to relocate the nest that was atop a power pole not far from the Fermi II nuclear plant.

In the late 1990's nesting ospreys, also known as the 'fish hawk,' were nearly non-existent in southern Michigan. And while they are making a comeback each nest is still very precious. "They're very attached to their nests, to their young, they're very devoted parents. They're just gorgeous birds," said Barb Jensen who is with a local osprey watch group.

The power pole that the pair is perched upon does not even belong to the utility, but is maintained by the Rockwood Landfill near Labo and Roberts roads. "We have had in the past where these nests have actually caught fire. So what we're trying to prevent is that fire or have something happen to the assets, the landfill, the lines or the birds themselves" said Jason Cousino, DTE Field Safety Specialist.

DTE has already performed two other successful osprey nest relocations in Monroe County. They stepped in to help when Cousino found out about the predicament. He says preserving wildlife is one of our greatest responsibilities and in this case it hit home.

"We brought the whole family down here. My son is 5-years-old and he already knows what an osprey and a bald eagle is. I pulled up this morning and there's a pheasant that ran in front of me, while there's two deer out in the field. It's quiet, it's a great place to raise a family," Cousino said.

The nest is being moved to state land, roughly 1,300 feet from the landfill. DTE crews are installing a pole onto which they'll attach a platform, appropriately built by a local Eagle Scout. They'll then transfer the nest material to the new home.

Jensen said, "It's absolutely marvelous, they have been supportive of the birds in the past. And they just continue their support. They're going to be helping to sponsor actually a GPS transmitter this year so we can attach one to one of our fledglings so that we can track it."

If you observe an osprey in southern Michigan, you're asked to report it to the DNR. The department is only collecting information about those osprey observed in the southern part of Lower Michigan.

According to the Michigan DNR any information will be useful including location, time, activity (flying, fishing, etc.), and markings. It is especially important to note if the bird is banded and, if possible, the number on the band.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
