GOODYEAR, Ariz. -

Goodyear Police say that a 12-year-old girl who claimed she was almost abducted by a man in a white van has recanted her statement.

The girl claimed the attempted abduction happened Friday morning near Westar Elementary School, but Tuesday, she admitted she fabricated the entire story.

She gave police a detailed description of the suspect, including the vehicle he was driving -- information that was widely disseminated to the public -- but it has been determined her story was untrue.

"The Goodyear Police Department takes all crime reports very seriously. The first priority of the department is to ensure the safety of our residents and visitors, therefore, many resources were mobilized to investigate this case. Goodyear Police would like to remind the community that false reporting is a serious crime," stated Goodyear Police.

The 7th grader is facing possible charges of false reporting. The case will be turned over to the juvenile county attorney for review.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
