Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em: Garden Grove Pot Shops Close

Posted: Updated:
Garden Grove, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) Today is crunch time for the operators of medical-marijuana dispensaries in Garden Grove. The police chief has sent them letters telling them they must close by today or face fines of $1,000 a day.

Garden Grove is reported to have among the highest concentration of medical marijuana storefronts in Orange County -- more than 60 of them. The city moved against medical marijuana dispensaries after California's high court ruled earlier this month that municipalities have the right to regulate pot shops.

From Gigi Graciette:

Cease and Desist...or Else. That's the order the city of Garden Grove has given the 60 medical marijuana clinics and collectives in town and they have until the end of today to shut down or they'll be subject to a $1000 a day fine.

Pot shops were actually banned here back in 2008 but a supreme court challenge had allowed them to remain open. But now a new ruling from the California Supreme Court says cities do indeed have the legal right to ban dispensaries using zoning ordinances.

And that's exactly what Garden Grove is doing; exercising it's legal right.

Medical marijuana users say this will force them to purchase the drug on the black market and would like to see the city regulate the shops instead of shutting them down.

So far the city has said "no" to that idea but activists are still hoping for a last minute reprieve and plan to make their case at a city council meeting tonight.
