Fire Burns Brush Near I-15 In Fontana Area

Posted: Updated:
Fontana, CA -

(AP) Firefighters working in high heat battled a 75-acre fire Monday along Interstate 15 just north of Fontana in San Bernardino County.

The fire started at 1:30 p.m. and grew quickly, forcing authorities to briefly shut down the southbound lanes of I-15 for several miles. The freeway was reopened within two hours.

The blaze was not contained, but fire crews were making good progress despite the soaring temperatures, said Daniel Berlant of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It was 99 degrees in Fontana, and winds were about 15 mph.

There was no immediate threat to structures in the sparsely populated area, which is home to scattered ranches, Berlant said. Some power lines were down.

Even though the area had recent rain, hot temperatures that followed dried the vegetation again and created a fire hazard, Berlant said.

"Hopefully, we don't let the rain fool anybody," he said. "Fire season is still here."

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
