Roswell police warn residents of phone scam

Posted: Updated:
ROSWELL, Ga. -

Police in Roswell are warning residents of a phone scam where the caller allegedly identifies himself as a Fulton County sheriff's deputy, and demands payments for tickets over the phone.

Police say the caller tells victims that there is a warrant for their arrest for speeding through the toll booth on Ga. 400. The caller says the ticket will be voided if payment is made by credit card or money order.

Bill Cooper was one of 17 people police say who have received the call from the supposed sheriff's deputy. The man insisted that Cooper got a speeding ticket on Georgia 400 on March 13 and he needed to give his credit card information to pay the fines immediately

"He warned me that the clarity of the picture was such that he could see that my wife was in the car with me.  So, as I say, he had a very good spiel going on.  He didn't miss a beat when I would ask him questions.  He came right back and read me my Miranda warnings and everything you would expect from a law enforcement officer," said Cooper.

Cooper wasn't on Ga. 400 that day and knew something was suspicious.

"I've never heard of a police officer calling somebody up and wanting a credit card number to pay fine....the more we talked to this fellow, the more we realized it wasn't legitimate," Cooper said.

Another victim says the scam artist took about $300 from him and then called him back a day later demanding more money.

Roswell police say it's a scam, and say they never call to demand payment. They urge people not to give out their credit card information and bank information.

Any residents receiving calls should immediately report them to the Roswell Police Department at 770-640-4100.
