DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) -

Family and friends are gathering Monday to remember the life of Brian Woehlke, the 29-year-old firefighter who was killed last week while crews battled a blaze at a Westland strip mall.

The service for Woehlke begins Monday morning at Church of the Divine Child in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn at 11 a.m.

Woehlke's survivors included his wife Jennifer, and 13-month-old daughter, Ava.

A fund has been set up following Woehlke's death. Contributions to the "Brian Woehlke Charity" may be made to the Westland Fire Fighters Charity, P.O. Box 851320, Westland, MI 48185, or may be delivered to any of five Wayne-Westland fire stations.

    Police officials in New York City have changed the way officers respond to fires.They’re now required to take the stairs when they enter structures that are burning.This follows the death of an officer earlier this month.Officer Dennis Guerra was overcome by smoke and carbon dioxide as he got off the elevator on the 13th floor of a Brooklyn building on April 6th. He died three days later.
