The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit is gearing up for the 8th Annual Doing the Most Good Week now through May 19, 2013. The annual observance is designed to encourage do-gooders of all ages to do something positive for their neighbors and their community. Individuals and groups are encouraged to demonstrate through actions, donations and social media their efforts in doing good unto others.

Doing the Most Good can be as easy as opening a door for someone, buying a cup of coffee for a stranger or flashing a smile at a passerby. It can also be more involved, such as hosting a food drive at work or worship center or taking the time to volunteer or make a donation to a favorite charity.

To mark Doing the Most Good Week, The Salvation Army and several partner organizations will be hosting a number of public activities and events:

Tuesday, May 14

The Salvation Army is hosting lunchtime fun in Campus Martius Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Downtown employees are encouraged to come down and enjoy performances by The Salvation Army Brass Band and ARC Singers, get some free chips and salsa from Garden Fresh Gourmet and grab lunch at the food truck rally (El Guapo, Mac Shack, Green Zebra and Treat Dreams).. The event will culminate around the Do Gooder Challenge (11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.). Corporate executives and media celebrities will participate in this friendly competition by sitting beneath a water-filled balloon while, at $2 a ball, employees, fans and passersby throw balls at a target in attempts to douse the "victim" with water.

Wednesday, May 15

All metro Detroit Olga's Kitchen restaurants in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties will donate 20 percent of the entire day's lunch and dinner sales when diners present a special Salvation Army of Metro Detroit voucher, available online at www.olgas.com/fundraisers.php.

Thursday, May 16

A Doing the Most Good Week collection drive will be held at the GM Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the GM parking lot located on Atwater St. Do-gooders are invited to clean out their closets and donate gently used clothing, furniture and electronics to help those in need. Donations will be sold at metro Detroit area Salvation Army Thrift Stores to support recovery programs offered through The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Centers.
