Female duck and her ducklings rescued on L.I.

On this Mother's Day, a mom on Long Island knew something was wrong when she saw another mother in need. 

A mother riding home to Dix Hills after a Mother's Day dinner became an animal rescue worker. She helped another mother and her babies get back together again.    

A bunch of tiny ducklings were at the bottom of a sewer in Deer Park. Janet Blair didn't see them from her car at first because she was looking at the mother duck on a nearby lawn and was wonder how she got there. 

"I don't know, it just caught my eye. I don't know -- I was meant to help this duck," said Blair. 

Blair's 16-year-old son Elijah used a flashlight app on his phone to look into the sewer and couldn't believe what he was seeing. So he started recording the scene on his tablet.  

"When we looked inside the sewer we heard chirping and with the chirping, I looked down and there was about a dozen baby ducklings," said Elijah. 

Blair, a working mother of five, didn't want to leave until they could help the stranded baby ducks. 

"I called animal shelters but no one would answer, so I called the police," said Blair. 

The police arrived and then called a special rescue unit. They believed the ducklings somehow got washed down the sewer drain with all of the rain water. The officers were able to get all of the ducklings out safely and reunite them with their mother – and off they went. 

"It just makes me feel great. I did a good deed and it makes me feel better as a mother. I helped another mother of another species -- so I feel good," said Blair. 

Janet Blair is hoping the story of these baby ducks being rescued will cheer up her own mother, who's currently in the hospital.
