DETROIT (WJBK) -

The Jefferson Bridge is closed this morning after a freighter collided with the drawbridge, sources say.

The Herbert C. Jackson was passing under the bridge on the Rouge River when the accident happened.

The ship was reportedly carrying 23,000 tons of iron ore pellets to the Severstal North American Steel Plant in Dearborn. There were no injuries.

The 670-foot freighter sustained minor damage, but damage to the bridge is more extensive.

The bridge is indefinitely closed to vehicle traffic, but must remain open to boat traffic, says the Chief Operating Office of Wayne County, Cindy Dingell.

Right now crews are working on how to raise the bridge for boats to safely pass under it.

This is the first accident in the bridge's 91-year history.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
