Cancer patient gets final wish for Mother's Day

Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

A valley woman's final wish was to have her entire family together for four days over Mother's Day weekend.

Thanks to an organization called the Dream Foundation, her wish came true.

May 11 could be Heidi Markus' last Mother's Day.

The 54-year-old has colon cancer and her prognosis isn't a good one.

"Recently the doctor told me that I had less than a year, actually he gave me six months," said Heidi Markus.

With family not only in the valley, but also Nevada and California, Heidi Markus says it's hard for everyone to get together.

That's when she contacted the Dream Foundation.

"I wanted them to know that when it comes all down to it, family is really important," said Heidi Markus.

The foundation, which helps terminally ill adults, flew her kids, their spouses and all 10 of her grandkids in for the weekend; it picked up all the costs.

"You know I've seen a lot of changes in mom to where, even though all of this bad stuff is happening, she's more positive than she's ever been," said Gerrit Markus.

Heidi's goal was to have a few family meals, a final family portrait and to attend church together.

"There is a date and a time and it's gonna happen at some point, you just hope it's not gonna be tomorrow. Just one day at a time, it's all you can do," said Gerrit Markus.

Heidi Markus says there is a lot of sadness leaving 16 family members behind, but she also says:

"I'm at peace with what's happening to me and I want them to know that I'm okay and that I'm going home."
