Police say they arrested a 19-year-old man after he nearly ran over an officer near Camelback Road and I-17 early Saturday morning.

A Phoenix police officer pulled over Hugo De Leon and as he approached him on foot, police say Leon turned his car and accelerated toward the officer.

The officer jumped out of the way in the nick of time and the car missed him by a few feet, according to officers.

Leon allegedly fled on Camelback Road and officers in the area pursued his car as he sped and swerved into oncoming traffic.

Police say Leon tried to turn into a business near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road, but was driving too fast and ended up slamming into a cement wall and a sign post.

According to officers, Leon showed signs of being drunk and the car he was driving was reported stolen on Friday.

Leon was taken to a hospital for treatment and later booked into jail. He faces charges of Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Theft of a Means of Transportation, suspected extreme DUI and other charges.
