SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -

As a doctor, he is the one usually telling families how to fight obesity.  So when he started to notice his own weight creeping up, he realized two things: How fast it can get out of control, and what it takes to turn it around.

He is the mild-mannered pediatrician who has doled out plenty of good advice on Fox 2.  So when he stepped on the scale in January, why did Dr. Marcus DeGraw do a double take?

"I was up around 215 pounds, and it's the heaviest I had ever been," he said.

He knew something had to change.

"I finally decided that enough was enough, and I was ready to deal with it," Marcus said.

Deal with it how?  With three young daughters and a very hectic life, there was only one option, enlist wife Melissa to be a weight loss buddy and find a simple way to cut calories.

"My portions can be huge, so if I'm eating better portions, then that's where I have the best success because then I'm not cutting out the things that I love," she said.

Marcus and Melissa started adding up every bite with the help of a free smart phone calorie counting app called My Fitness Pal.  He was shocked by his snack total.

"Tortilla chips, for instance, some of those brands, one serving was only seven chips and there'd be 200 calories," Marcus said.  "Of course, nobody eats seven chips.  You'd eat 30, and all of a sudden you're dealing with 600 calories just for a snack."

You can even just scan a barcode and the calories will end up in your daily total.

You might think with all the labeling and all the information we have access to, we would know how many calories we are eating, but we don't.

"When you talk to people and ask how many calories they get every day, they'll probably underestimate calories by as much as 30 to 50 percent," Marcus said.

And if we adults are doing a lousy job in understanding how many calories are sneaking into our bodies, imagine the kids.

"Parents will frequently say, well, they're in gymnastics, but if they go for an hour a week, they might burn 200 calories," Marcus said.  "Just four Oreos, they've ruined that one round of exercise."

Marcus is down almost 30 pounds since the time the family Christmas picture was taken.

"Simple changes.  I really still have not had a lot of time to exercise," he said.  "It was just paying attention to my calories and cutting it down to a better level."

Melissa is down ten pounds herself.  She said tackling the weight together makes it easier, although still not fair.

"I'd go, 'How much did you lose this time?' she said.  "I'm losing 0.4 pounds, and he's down three."

A recent study did find that women do have to do a lot more then men when it comes to diet and exercise to get the same benefit.
