FOX 32 Sunday: Reporter’s Notebook: Mother's Day for victims' families

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It is Mother's Day and sadly while many people are making plans like dinner and brunch reservations with their children and loved ones, here in Chicago, too many mothers have lost a child to gun violence.

Last week, I sat down with the Pendleton family. Their daughter Hadiya was killed in January after finishing up exams at king college prep.

She was gunned down in a park, less than a mile from President Barack Obama's Kenwood home. For Cleo Pendleton, this will be the first Mother's Day without her 15 year old daughter.

We talked about the pain she still feels. How she still thinks about her Hadiya.

My interview aired and as soon as I was finished a couple of mothers called me to remind me that the Pendleton's aren't the only ones dealing with the loss of a child and will be looking at an empty seat at the dinner table today.

I'm sorry to the mothers not included in the story, because you too have experienced a loss and your pain needs to be reported too.

So while, I've already sent out candy, cards, text messages and calls to celebrate the mothers in my life.

Right now, I want to wish all mothers---those who have loved and lost--a special Mother's Day to you.

A casino piano tuner in Atlantic City is fighting the state's attempt to seize his late parents' house as part of a redevelopment project connected to the closing Revel Hotel Casino. Charlie Birnbaum says the house in the shadow of the failed casino was his father's livelihood. He says he is attached to the home, even though his mother was killed there in 1998.
