Brookhaven meeting held to address recent crimes

Posted: Updated:
BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -

The Brookhaven community held an emergency meeting on Thursday to address the rash of crime in their area.

Dozens of residents – some of them recent burglary victims – met with DeKalb County police. They want beefed up police presence and they don't want to get broken in to anymore.

One family just moved in to Brookhaven from Cobb County a month ago. They said they love the neighborhood, but to have expensive jewelry stolen, along with several other valuables was simply too much.

"I'm angry that somebody thought that this was OK, and, you know, frightened our dogs. We've got our door boarded up with two by fours now. I refuse to let this change my view of the neighborhood because it's a great neighborhood with wonderful neighbors," said Debbie Beldin.

DeKalb County police officers listened to resident's complaints and offered recommendations to fortify their homes and prevent car break-ins, but they didn't say anything about beefing up squad car patrols.  They recommended residents get to know their neighbors better and to report any suspicious activity to police.

Six people were indicted Wednesday in an international ring that managed to take over more than 1,000 StubHub users' accounts and fraudulently buy tickets to such prime events as Jay-Z and Elton John concerts, a New York Yankees-Boston Red Sox game and Broadway shows like "The Book of Mormon," the Manhattan district attorney said. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said the thieves would then resell the tickets and split up the proceeds.
