Does skateboarding T-shirt promote domestic violence?

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX -

A skateboarding supply company has pulled a T-shirt because some customers complained it promotes domestic violence. A valley woman petitioned to have the company stop sales, and they listened.

The company, Enjoi, has taken a lot of heat for making this shirt. The woman who led the petition believes that it normalizes domestic violence.

"He really does love his skateboard more than me." That's the text on this T-shirt made by Enjoi. The picture is a girl with a broken arm crying.

"My first initial reaction was that I was really confused, wait, am I reading into this weird? But this message really is a domestic violence message," says Ginae Klasek.

We spoke to Ginae Klasek from Tucson on Skype. She started the online petition to have Enjoi stop selling the shirt. After six days she got nearly 1,900 signatures

"Pretty much everybody on there is saying how much they're affected by domestic and sexual violence either themselves or someone in their family or friends."

Enjoi pulled the shirts today online and in stores, and responded to Klasek on Facebook. One comment says, "the character on this T-shirt was not a victim of domestic violence." Another says "why do you assume her skater boyfriend beat her up? He's actually a swell guy."

Klasek grew up skateboarding and is disappointed to see this company normalizing negativity toward women.

"We don't want these messages going out to anybody. I'm not talking about children, it's everyone. We need to stop and look at what these messages are saying. Is this ok?"

I posted a picture of the shirt and my Facebook page and a lot of people said the character probably fell of the boyfriend's skateboard and he cared more about the board then her.

Either way, Enjoi has pulled them, but Klasek still wants a written statement. We reached out to Enjoi for comment but have heard nothing back.
