A dramatic spike in the number of Americans with permits to carry concealed weapons coincides with an equally stark drop in violent crime, according to a new study, which Second Amendment advocates say makes the case that more guns can mean safer streets.

DEWEY, Ariz. (AP) - Yavapai County sheriff's deputies say a fifth-grader is in trouble after he was found on a school bus with a BB gun in his backpack.

The sheriff's office says deputies were dispatched to Dewey on Wednesday after getting a call about an 11-year-old student with a handgun. A fellow student had seen what he thought was a gun and told his father, who called authorities.

Deputies caught up with the bus and found a BB gun in the boy's backpack.

The boy told deputies he mistakenly left the gun in his backpack after playing with it over the weekend. He discovered it in his bag while riding the bus.

The sheriff's office says the boy, who attends school in Prescott Valley, has been charged with interference or disruption of an education institution.

Police responded to the Brooklyn Bridge on Tuesday for a major security breach at one of the most highly secured landmarks in New York City. Two white flags — international symbols of surrender — fluttered from poles on the stone supports that hold cables above the span connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. It is not clear who raised the flags that had a faint appearance of the stars and stripes or why.  The American flags that are normally up at the bridge were removed.
