DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

New honors are on the way for the Detroit musician who is the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary 'Searching for Sugar Man."

On Thursday Detroit folk singer Sixto Rodriguez will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Wayne State University.

In the 1970's Rodriguez became a star in South Africa after his anti-establishment lyrics touched those living during apartheid. But here in the United States his albums flopped and the documentary chronicles the search for the musician who many thought was dead.

Now Rodriguez is being honored for remaining politically involved and connected to the community, living in the city of Detroit and working to improve conditions for the inner-city working class, WSU said in a statement.

In 1981 Rodriguez earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from WSU and today joins more than 3,500 students participating in two WSU spring commencement ceremonies at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.
