Chemical Spill Prompts South Jersey High School Evacuation

Posted: Updated:
GALLOWAY, N.J. -

A brief scare led to an evacuation at a high school in Atlantic County earlier on Thursday.

Around 9 a.m., students were removed from Absegami High School in Galloway due to a strong smell coming from a closet that stores chemicals and supplies on the second floor of the school.

Police, fire and hazardous materials crews arrived on the scene to find an unidentified chemical spill.

SkyFOX, flying over the scene at Absegami High School in the Greater Egg Harbor Regional High School District, showed that students appeared to be gathered in the bleachers at the school's stadium. Officials were milling about outside the school entrance, some wearing hazardous materials gear.

District officials said no students or faculty were injured.

The students returned to classes by noon.
