Students at Desert Mountain High exposed to tuberculosis

Posted: Updated:
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

High school students in Scottsdale are getting ready for an important test next Monday -- but this one won't be administered inside the classroom.

Students at Desert Mountain High School were exposed to tuberculosis, and the state health department wants to make sure they're not carrying the disease.

It happened last month at Desert Mountain High in north Scottsdale. A student was diagnosed with active tuberculosis. Some fellow students were exposed.

Sounds scary, doesn't it?

"It's not crazy infectious like some other diseases like measles or other diseases might be," assures Dr. Bob England.

Letters went out warning parents about the exposures in the classroom -- that children could be at risk and should take a test.

"Because it's not so infectious, a typical person has a reasonable immune system. We look at people who shared time, air space with that person the most and test them."

Tuberculosis infects the lungs and it spreads when someone coughs germs into the air. Everyone in the classroom should be tested -- but not the entire school.

A TB scare is not uncommon. The Maricopa County Public Health Department has around 150 to 200 cases every year.

This is the third school in the county to have a TB scare this year. Students will be tested next Monday by the Department of Public Health.

You've got a few more weeks to enjoy SummerStage, New York's annual performing arts showcase that's 28 years running. But it's not just music: there is dance, comedy, theater, you name it. There are several shows weekly at 14 different parks throughout the five boroughs. A recent show at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park paid tribute to Pete Seeger. Most of the shows are free and are funded by tickets purchased for the some of the bigger acts.
