Ind. man shoots neighbor’s dog that jumped fence, attacked children

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An Indiana man emptied his gun into his neighbor's dog after the animal jumped a fence to attack his 4-year-old son.

The 32-year-old resident of the 400 block of Sturgeon Drive in Union Township told police his children were playing in their fenced-in backyard Friday while he was in the garage. About 4:35 p.m., his daughter ran to get him, yelling her brother was being attacked, the Post-Tribune is reporting.

The man found his next-door neighbor's pit bull on top of the screaming preschooler, who had been bitten in the face. He told police he carried his son indoors, grabbed his pistol and went back outside, shooting the growling dog six to eight times, until the partially-loaded gun was empty, killing the dog.

The other family told police they had let the dog, Maduke, out into their fenced-in backyard about 20 minutes before the incident, and it had never before attacked anyone or jumped their 5-foot fence. They said the neighbor, however, had threatened to shoot Maduke before, and they accused the children of repeatedly provoking the dog by poking him with sticks through the chain-link fence.

As police questioned the shooter next to the ambulance, where his son was being prepared to be taken to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso, Ind., for bites to the face and arm, the 18-year-old son of the dog owners arrived. He was screaming and trying to get to the shooter and was held back by his father and an officer. According to the police report, he stopped only when the officer threatened to use a Taser on him.

Police were unable to determine where Maduke could have jumped over or gone under the fence. The dog was current on its shots, but animal control took him for rabies testing.

Police are continuing to investigate.
