28 fallen DPS officers remembered at ceremony

PHOENIX -

On the first Monday of May each year, the men and women killed in the line of duty are honored at the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

The moving ceremony honored the officers who've died in the line of duty. 28 officers with Arizona DPS were remembered, by members of their family and Arizona officials.

"This memorial service is so important to us as survivors to feel that they're not forgotten," said Cathie Buckmister.

Buckmister's son Brett was a DPS officer for one year, one month and one day. He was killed in car accident south of Page responding to a call in 2000.

"It was a foggy icy snowy day and he was on his way to that accident and was killed crashing into an oncoming vehicle."

Family, friends and dignitaries were in attendance to for the ceremony, including Governor Jan Brewer.

The Arizona Highway Patrol Association and DPS hold the event each year -- though it has become much more than that -- now a family gathering of sorts.

"We're welcoming the families, spouses, children, but if you look at it, we're all a part of the family. We work alongside them. It's a good time to bring us together and celebrate these officers," says DPS Sgt. Jimmy Chavez.

The memorial is held each year. Another ceremony takes place next week in our nation's capital each May. The name of every fallen officer is etched in stone in Washington D.C.

Later Monday, Brewer attended a second service later Monday commemorating all 308 officers who have died across the state.
