CLEVELAND, Ga. -

Kentucky Wildcats starting safety and former Georgia all-star Ashely Lowery was injured in an early morning single car crash on Saturday.

A spokesperson with the Georgia State Patrol tells FOX 5 News that the 20-year-old Lowery was driving alone on Town Creek Road near Abb Helton Road in White County around 4 a.m. Saturday when his 2006 Nissan Altima left the roadway and flipped several times.

Lowery, who troopers say was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, was thrown about a hundred feet from the car. He was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with serious injuries.

The Associate Press reports that a hospital spokeswoman declined to release any information.

FOX 5 News spoke with a family friend who says that doctors have brought Lowery out of a medically induced coma on Sunday and is now responsive. He received a fractured pelvis and broken wrist in the crash. They say he is still being assessed of other injuries.

Lowery was fifth in tackles last season for the Wildcats despite an injury causing him to miss four games. He graduated from White County High School in 2011 and made first-team all-state in Class AAA by the Georgia Sports Writers Association and was regional Offensive Player of the Year.
