WHEELING, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two men were charged with the shooting death of a man who was standing next to an alleged gang member the pair were targeting Wednesday night in northwest suburban Wheeling.

Jesus Sanchez, 18, of the 2000 block of West Nichols Road in Arlington Heights and Collin Scheffler, 19, of the 0-100 block of Countryside Lane in Prospect Heights were each charged with first degree murder and attempted first degree murder, Wheeling police announced Saturday.

Sanchez was held in lieu of $2 million bail, while Scheffler was given a bond amount of $500,000, according to the Cook County Sheriff's Office. They are both scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday in Rolling Meadows.

Officers responded at 9 p.m. Wednesday to a call of shots fired and a person shot at the Winetree Apartment Complex in the 400 block of Pleasant Run Drive in Wheeling, police said.

When police got to the scene, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Rafael A. Orozco, 23, of the 500 block of Pleasant Run Drive, was pronounced dead at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview at 9:50 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Orozco also lived in the Winetree Apartment Complex, police said.

An autopsy on Thursday found Orozco suffered a fatal gunshot to the back and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the medical examiner's office.

Sanchez, a self-admitted gang member, and Scheffler, the driver of the vehicle, allegedly admitted their plan to murder a rival gang member who they had several previous confrontations with that day, police said.

The rival gang member was standing near Orozco at the time of the shooting, police said.
