Two men charged with hitting Elgin cops, fleeing to Wisconsin

ELGIN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two northwest suburban men have been charged with multiple felonies after they allegedly ran over two Elgin police officers, leading police on a 115-mile, high-speed chase that stretched into Wisconsin before they were stopped early Saturday.

Elgin police identified the driver as Jacob Braden, 22, of the 800 block of Honey Locust Court in Bartlett. He has been charged in Kane County court with two felony counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, two felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, one felony count of burglary and one felony count of criminal damage to state supported property.

The passenger, identified as 30-year-old Kevin Gorman of the 1200 block of Lincoln Court in Streamwood, was charged with one felony count each of burglary, aggravated resisting arrest and criminal damage to state supported property, according to Elgin police.

The incident began when Elgin police responded to a Sam's Club in the 1000 block of South Randall Road about 2:45 a.m. on reports of a burglary in progress.

Police found two men trying to flee in a pickup, Elgin Police Cmdr. Glenn Theriault said. A lieutenant tried to arrest the passenger, but the driver took off, knocking the lieutenant to the ground.

The pickup then hit a police sergeant on foot and crashed into a squad car before it sped off, leading police on a chase that lasted more than 115 miles, through Chicago and into Wisconsin, Theriault said.

The chase went through Kane County and the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway, before taking the Eisenhower Expressway into downtown Chicago, Illinois State Police said.

The driver sped onward to the Kennedy Expressway, through the Northwest Side, then onto the Edens Expressway and the Tri-State Tollway before reaching the Wisconsin border.

A Wisconsin State Trooper received a phone call from Illinois State Police that they and Elgin police were pursuing the pickup truck, according to a statement from Wisconsin State Highway Patrol.

The trooper was able to locate the vehicle, a gray Chevrolet Silverado, as it came across the state line into Wisconsin. He pursued the vehicle at 80- 90 mph through Kenosha County and into Racine County, the statement said. Once the vehicle was in Racine County, Racine County Sheriff's officers used deployed spike stripes to stop the vehicle. The spike strips shredded the vehicle's tires, according to a state patrol sergeant, and the Silverado came to a stop on a highway off-ramp.

The two men in the Silverado, both Illinois residents, were taken into custody without further incident.

The driver was taken into custody for fleeing, speeding and possession of stolen property, according to Wisconsin State Patrol. The passenger was taken into custody for possession of stolen property. Both were being held on Saturday at the Racine County Jail and were expected to appear in court in Wisconsin to face additional charges on Monday at 2:30 p.m.

Neither suspect was hurt from the arrest, but the passenger was treated as a precaution at a local hospital for a prior injury not related to the chase, Theriault said.

Both Elgin police officers suffered minor leg injuries, and have been treated and released from an area hospital.

"When you have a suspect who is willing to run over two police officers he's a danger to society and we need to take him into custody," Theriault said of the early morning chase.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
