DETROIT (WJBK) -

A beloved girls basketball coach at Cody High School is one of the latest victims of deadly gun violence in Detroit.  Family, friends and players gathered on Friday to remember Coach Charles Knott.

Knott, hired in 1988, was a fixture at Cody High.  He knew basketball, but he also knew how to mold high school girls into responsible young women.

"He was like a father figure to everyone," said former player Jazmyne Forster.

This year's girls basketball team huddled in tears surrounded by former Cody players, fellow students and staff.

Knott was shot multiple times by someone in a Jeep on Tuesday.  He was parked outside his apartment on Petoskey near Dexter.  Police say he was robbed and are still pursuing a suspect.

"He just loved everybody," said former player Marsea Wadley.

"He was a great man," said former player Rita Carter.  "If it wasn't for him, a lot of us wouldn't have made it."

"I've known him to give parents money in order to keep their lights on," said Antonio Baker, who was an assistant under Knott.

When Knott retired in March, Baker became the girls' new head coach.

Baker said one of Knott's goals was to make sure his athletes got into college.

"I believe, because he constantly bragged about it, he put close to 56 girls in college in some form or fashion," Baker said.  "So he helped a lot of young people with a foundation."

Coach Charles Knott was only 54.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $2,500 reward.  If you have any information, call 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
