Bee expert says he's been receiving lots of calls

PHOENIX -

There's always a buzz in the air in spring. It's the buzz of bees, looking to build new colonies. So don't be surprised if they decide to settle around your home or neighborhood.

Bees living in a palm tree swarmed a woman walking past the tree and stung her 20 times on her head mouth and ears.

"That's kind of scary walking through here every day," said one neighbor.

Neighbors near Thomas and 42nd Street use this sidewalk every day. Bee Expert Kevin Shannon says it doesn't take much to anger a bee.

"Just get close [and bees get mad]! and I recommend people just stay away," says Shannon.

Bees can build a hive just about anywhere -- in trees, bushes, eaves, even inside your house between walls. That's what they did in this Tempe home.

"The interior is not completely grouted, cavities are inside the wall that are desirable for the bees, so the bees move in and start a colony."

It didn't take long to get rid of the new colony. Shannon used a poison in an aerosol can, filling the wall and killing the queen.

"Once the queen is dead then the colony dies off, we seal it off."

If you see bees, there is probably a hive close by. Check your property twice a week. Bee season starts in mid-march and goes through October.
