DETROIT (WJBK) -

May 3, 2010 was a dark night for the Detroit Police Department.  Five officers were shot after responding to a 911 call.  42-year-old Brian Huff, a twelve year veteran officer and married father, was fatally wounded.  The four other officers have since recovered.

Then Police Chief Warren Evans delivered the horrible news.  On his right was Huff's commander Steve Dolunt.

Three years later, Commander Dolunt, wearing a Brian Huff picture on his T-shirt, will join the department in a ceremony at 3:30 a.m. on May 3 in front of the house where Huff was fatally shot on Schoenherr.

The department is retiring Huff's car code -- the radio call sign 5-14.  It's a department first.

"No one else will use 5-14 again," Dolunt said.  "It's never happened before.  It's a great idea.  I don't know who's idea it was, but it's a great idea."

Wearing white in court, 26-year-old Jason Gibson was convicted of killing Huff.  He is doing life in prison without parole.

In his over 27 years with the department, Dolunt remembers every line of duty death.

"In Detroit alone, we've lost 33 police officers," he said.

Check out the two videos for Ron Savage's report remembering that tragic night, and Roop Raj's coverage of the ceremony.

Brooklyn's final pitch to hold the 2016 Democratic national convention was centered on New York City's robust mass transit system -- and a pledge to learn "from the mistakes" from the last time the city hosted a presidential convention. The Republicans gathered in New York in 2004 to re-nominate President George W. Bush, choosing to meet in deep-blue Manhattan less than three years after the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
