Philadelphia Police Warn Increase In Street Robberies In Northern Liberties

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Philadelphia police are investigating a string of robberies in and around Northern Liberties.

"It's kind of scary to know that people get out late and people right in the middle of the street are getting robbed," said Amelia Breslin. Her store, Poochie's Place, sits at 4th and Girard, where police say a string of robberies have gone down nearby.

"I'm usually here late and sometimes you're by yourself and it is kind of scary," said Breslin.

Several happened last weekend between 10 p.m. and midnight near 4th and Girard, 5th and Girard and 1100 north Front Street. Police believe it's the same two men targeting people walking alone or using an ATM. They approach, ask for directions or simply pull out a gun and rob people.

"That honestly makes me a little bit scared. This is a different kind of environment for me and I'm still getting used to that," said Andrea James, who moved to the area from Lancaster.  She knew moving to the city meant she had to come prepared.

"I am very cautious when I'm walking home if I'm getting off work late.  I don't have my cell phone out and my pepper spray is in my bag. I think that is maybe where people let their guard down," said James.

Police are warning people to be aware of their surroundings and on the lookout for unsuspecting criminals watching and waiting. Amelia Breslin says when she leaves work after hours she'll be looking around now more than ever before.

"Oh definitely," said Breslin.

Police don't have a good description of the robbers. They say the best advice is to walk with someone if you're out at night and be aware of your surroundings.
