MYFOXNY.COM -

One person shot and fatally wounded himself inside a terminal at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, according to police in Houston.

It happened on Thursday afternoon. Homicide police were called to the scene to investigate.  Several emergency vehicles were seen outside of the terminal.

The man with the gun had not crossed the security checkpoint and no one else was hurt in the shooting, MyFoxHouston reported.

A police spokesman said at a news conference that the man fired his gun into the ceiling.

"Homeland Security special agent heard the shot. His office is right nearby, came out, confronted the suspect, gave him verbal commands to drop his weapon," the spokesman said. "The suspect, still armed, turned toward the special agent. The special agent then discharged his weapon, fearing for his safety and that of the passengers in the terminal. At the same time it appears that the suspect may have shot himself."

Police said the gunman was transported to an area hospital where he died.

MyFoxHouston reported that the elevator system in Terminal B had been shut down but the airport reported that air traffic was not affected by the incident.

A picture tweeted from near Gate B81A showed hundreds of people standing in a corridor.
