Say Hello To New USC Professor David Petraeus

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Former U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus will take a job at USC, teaching classes, participating in panel discussions, mentoring student veterans and ROTC members, among other things, the university announced today.

Petraeus, who will start this fall, has been named a Judge Widney Professor, a position named for USC founder Robert Maclay Widney.

USC President Max Nikias said Petraeus "embodies all the noble qualities of our founder along with a fearless commitment to excellence." USC historian Kevin Starr called Petraeus a "clear-thinking jargon-free polymath" who would "add a transformative energy to our teaching."   Petraeus, 60, was the top U.S. military commander in 2010 and 2011, succeeding Stanley
McChrystal. He briefly headed the CIA but resigned last year amid a scandal over an extramarital affair he had with his biographer.

At West Point, where he graduated in the top 5 percent of his class in 1974, he later taught economics and international relations. He also earned a doctorate in international relations from Princeton in 1987.
