CAMP VERDE, Ariz. -

A Prescott man has been arrested after assaulting his girlfriend, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office.

The victim told deputies that Joshua Stratford, 28, had assaulted her and thrown her to the ground while at Fossil Creek Campgrounds over the weekend. She hit her head on a rock and lost consciousness.

When someone tried to step in, the suspect allegedly displayed a handgun and fired off some shots in their direction. The woman, her son, and two others then fled in her vehicle.

Stratford was located sleeping in his tent and denied having a gun. But the next day, an off-duty deputy who was camping in the area found it in the woods and submitted it as evidence.

Stratford is facing charges of aggravated assault, endangerment, prohibited possession of a firearm, and disorderly conduct.
