Payton principal: Game cancellation was not due to fear

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The principal of one of Chicago's most prestigious public high schools says a controversial game cancellation Monday had nothing to do with fear.

Over the weekend, coaches from Walter Payton on the North Side and Gwendolyn Brooks, located in Roseland, said that a game was canceled because players' parents were afraid.

The coaches said the Payton parents refused to let their kids go south, but Payton's principal told kids, "The cancellation came about due to poor communication by the coach to parents about the date and time... who would be responsible for transportation... and which players would dress for the game. The cancellation had nothing to do at all with the location of Brooks in our Chicago community."
