East Mesa justice accused of shoplifting, caught on video

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

Caught on camera -- a man shoplifting from a Mesa Walmart. But what makes this story so unusual is that police say the suspect in the case is a justice of the peace.

This happened at 6 a.m. on the morning of March 28 at an east Mesa Walmart, located near Greenfield and the U.S. 60.

Surveillance video from the Walmart allegedly shows Judge Mark Chiles, an East Mesa Justice of the Peace, opening a box, taking out a speaker, closing the box and putting it back on the shelf.

He then hides the $43 speaker in his shopping cart under some clothes and leaves the store. A store detective watched the whole thing and notified Mesa police.

Police investigator to Chiles in interrogation video: "[Walmart doesn't] want to make a big deal out of it, they are just looking to get their merchandise back."

The judge did not bring back that speaker, and he says he didn't think he stole anything.

"I do not even know what it was for, I thought I bought it," said Chiles.

He was not at his home when we came calling, nor was he at the East Mesa Justice Court.

Because of the misdemeanor shoplifting charge, the Maricopa Justice Courts have ordered Judge Chiles Reassigned to other duties while judicial discipline proceedings go forward.
