Police investigate non-explosive package found glued underneath woman's car

Posted: Updated:
GOODYEAR, Ariz. -

Police say a suspicious package found underneath a woman's car Sunday afternoon was not an explosive.

Goodyear police and Glendale Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team spent three hours investigating the beeping device. It was described as being the size of a pin box and wrapped in cellophane.

On closer examination, investigators say it was an anti-theft device from a clothing store that someone wrapped in cellophane.

Goodyear police spokesperson Lisa Kutis says a woman was at a Subway restaurant near Litchfield Road and I-10 when she first heard a beeping sound, but didn't think much of it.

Then the woman went to the Brass Armadillo near McDowell and Dysart Roads and heard the beeping again.

Kutis says the woman looked underneath her car and saw something glued to the bottom of her mini van, making strange sounds.

The woman then took it out from under the car and threw it into a nearby bush.

Although the device was determined to be non-explosive, police are still treating the situation as a crime because of the resources wasted during the investigation.

The woman is a middle-aged social worker and has no idea who put it there or when.

Shoppers were unable to get to their cars during the three hour investigation.
