Breast-pumping mom: I was `humiliated` by flight attendant

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

"Humiliated" and "embarrassed" are just a couple adjectives an Indiana mother of three boys used to describe her experience on an American Airlines flight from Minneapolis to Chicago.

Dawnella Brahos says the lead flight attendant publicly ridiculed her, and then prevented her from using her breast pump.

"When I got on, she was very loud about saying no, that wasn't going to be an option and then she soon after followed me back to my seat," Brahos explains.

"Not being able to pump when I'm scheduled to pump it could cause an effect in the future on not having as much of a supply.

Brahos says the flight attendant didn't care and repeatedly checked to make sure she wasn't using her breast pump. She also called her a liar when she said she had permission to use the pump.

"I had no choice in this booking because we were rerouted," says Brahos. "In previous flights, I had paid extra to sit in certain spots next to window so there wouldn't be any issues with a stranger next to me but here I was at an aisle."

Her husband and another passenger were seated next to her.

American Airlines emailed FOX 32 News a statement saying, "We apologize for the experience Ms. Brahos had on a recent flight. Our in-flight personnel are trained to handle these situations with professionalism and discretion. American does not have a policy prohibiting the use of breast pumps in-flight. As with other devices that have an on/off switch, customers will be asked not to use them during takeoff and landing. Our procedures advise our crews to ensure that mothers who are breast feeding or using breast pumps have the privacy they need."

National Organization for Women President Terry O'Neill called the incident shameful and outrageous.

"You know, it is not okay to shame women about any aspect of their reproductive health lives and breast feeding," O'Neill says. "Breast pumping is simply another aspect of being a mom and there's no excuse for the flight attendant behaving the way she did."

Dawnella Brahos did receive a $100 voucher from American Airlines. She says she hopes they will streamline its policy and improve training in the future. It remains a mystery what if any disciplinary action was taken on the flight attendant involved.
