Apple to Microsoft: Our Laptops Beat Yours With Your Own OS!

Posted: Updated:

Ok, no "anonymous" source in Cupertino can be quoted as having said that headline, but you know someone at Apple has been thinking it! And now, thanks to IT solutions vendor, Soluto, the rest of the world knows the "truth"… Windows runs best on Apple's hardware. Heck, it's how I convinced my wife- a non-techie, Microsoft fan girl- that getting her a Macbook Air was actually a good thing. I told her that Windows 7 would run better on it than on most the hardware made specifically for it, based on a report from one of the major tech blogs years ago.

"Witchcraft and shenanigans," you say! Well, maybe but it would appear that Soluto has done their due diligence in constructing their "PC Purchasing Guide for Small Businesses" report by taking a sample of: 224,144 crashes, 1,346,000 boots, 250,791 hangs, 62,476 hours spent on boot and 84,251 blue screens of death (BSoDs). According to the report, Apple's Macbook Pro 13, mid-2012 takes the top honors with laptops by Acer and Dell coming in 2nd through 5th. Apple's 15" Retina Macbook Pro was also in the top ten, coming in 6th with Lenovo's Thinkpad X1 Carbon rounding out Soluto's list of "Best Performing Windows Laptops." Now before I get a ton of hate mail from the Windows faithful, it should be noted that there are also a lot of myths floating around the interwebs from Mac fanboys about the superiority of Cupertino's everthing over Microsoft's anything so I've included and dispelled a couple below.

Fanboism #1: Macs don't get viruses- A lot of people still believe this and it just is not true! On average, they're infected much less than Windows rigs but that isn't because of superior software as much as it is a numbers game. Microsoft still owns the laptop market (91.89%) so hackers go after their OS the most where Mac holds just 6.94% of desktops which makes them a small (read: not profitable?) target.

Fanboism #2: Macs are better because they cost more… they're "high end." I'll keep this one short. Spend the same three thousand dollars for a laptop comparable to a Macbook Pro and you will get a laptop comparable to a Macbook Pro. It's that simple.

Fanboism #3: Macs are better for graphic artists and editors. Both processor intensive tasks, serious graphics work and digital video editing require serious hardware. I know, I've been a professional editor for the last 17 years and have worked on both multi-cam and effects heavy projects on both Mac and Windows hardware and haven't found a difference. Waiting for something to render or rapidly moving around a complex sequence is all about processing power. Mac or PC, you're going to get what you pay for.
