Phony utility workers target elderly DeKalb Co. couple

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

DeKalb County residents say they were duped by phony utility workers who said they needed to do some work on their property, but instead they were robbed.

Police in DeKalb County say at least four homeowners have been scammed by a team of suspects, and  fear they could strike again.

Eddie and Nelly Bateh say a man in a hard hat knocked on the door of their Brookhaven home last week. The man claimed he needed to cut down a tree, and wanted to know how far the property line went. He lured both of the elderly residents out of the home while someone slipped inside and stole cash and jewelry.

"He tried to convince me that he could do a good job cutting trees and all of that. Then I just turned around and came back. He said he'll come back the next day and start cutting trees," said 90-year-old Eddie Bateh.

Last week, a Tucker woman fell victim to a similar ruse when phony utility workers dressed as Georgia Power sub-contractors robbed her of thousands of dollars in diamonds.

DeKalb police say a team of people is working together, and they are trying to figure out exactly how many suspects are involved. They know that one of them is a woman. Police ask if you see anything unusual, call them at 404-371-2000.
