FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Authorities in Fulton County say a dog attacked and killed a child on Wednesday.

According to police the 2-year-old was killed on Sierra Trail in south Fulton County. Police said that the mother was home with the child.

"The mother did go to the restroom.  She advised it happened fast.  When she came out, her son was clearly deceased," said Melissa Parker of the Fulton County Police Department.

Neighbors said that they heard the mother's screams as she ran out of the house.

"She was rolling around on the ground.  ‘The dog killed my baby, the dog killed my baby,'" said Joseph Messam.

Authorities said that the dog was a pit bull and had been the family pet for eight years.

The dog was taken to Fulton County Animal Control, where it will be observed for several days. In a statement released Thursday, animal control officials say "no determination has been made regarding the disposition of the animal."

The child's mother was so distraught that she was taken to the hospital for observation. Police said that they don't expect any charges to be filed in the tragic incident.
